Meditation on the Making of America, 2019
The Shed, New York City

In Meditation on the Making of America, Kiyan Williams considers the relationship between embodied and geographic displacement and dispossession, with the Black Diaspora as a point of departure. Using soil as a primary material, the artist outlines a rough map of the continental U.S. using gestures that evoke the violence of settler colonialism and extraction that are foundational to American empire.
