Where Will The Poor Go, 2016
New York, NY
Where Will The Poor Go (#WhereWillThePoorGo) is a site-specific, public performance project that questions the rampant displacement of poor people from their communities. In the first installment performers dressed in trash bags and boxes with signs that read "Where will the poor go?." We traveled through Bushwick and Harlem, two rapidly gentrifying neighborhoods in New York. The performance ended in front of the Whole Foods grocery store on the corner of 125th St and Malcolm X Blvd slated to open in 2017. A diverse cross section of Harlem's community - longtime residents, recent transplants, police officers - activated the performance in an impromptu public dialogue about the impact of Harlem's shifting social and economic landscape.
